
In the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies, legendary secret agent James Bond drives an E38-generation BMW 750iL equipped with machine guns, rockets, and other spy-worthy goodies. 28 years later, news comes to us via a report from CarScoops that the 7th Battalion 114th Separate Brigade of Ukrainian Armed Forces have built a weapon-equipped E38 of their own for combat against the Russian invasion forces. And theirs is definitely not firing blanks on a Hollywood set.
Videos of the Ukrainian/Bavarian war machine have been making the rounds on social media over the last few days; BFBS Forces News posted a reel to their Instagram page showing this BMW in action, for example.
The BMW has been equipped with a portion of a Soviet Union-designed BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) that is capable of firing three 122-mm rockets. As it's mounted to a 7-Series BMW, that the vehicle seemingly lacks any of the typical armor of a MLRS launching vehicle—but what it lacks in armor it makes up for in maneuverability versus the 14-ton truck it is typically mounted to. The camouflaged BMW can race into position, fire its weapons, and be gone in a matter of moments.
Still, the fact that this is on a BMW sedan could indicate that more typical launch platform vehicles are not easy to come by in Ukraine right now. The military had to be creative—and from what can be seen in the videos of this MLRS in action, the E38 BMW fulfills its duties quite well. It would seem this 7-Series has been transformed from an ultimate driving machine into an ultimate fighting machine.
